Neuman
Viola Violist Lawrence Neuman has been a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1991. Before coming to Chicago, he was violist with the Miami String Quartet.
Recipient of the Universal Editions Prize at the 1988 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, Neuman has performed as soloist with the National Repertory Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Costa Rica, the Kammergild Chamber Orchestra, and the Eastman-Dryden Orchestra. As a chamber musician he is heard frequently throughout the Chicago area and has performed across the United States and in Europe. He has been heard at summer festivals in Marlboro, LaJolla, Madison, Portland, and Davenport and has collaborated with such artists as Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zukerman,Lydia Artimiw, Gil Shaham, and Aaron Rosand.
During the '98-'99 season, Neuman took a leave of absence from the CSO to serve as Principal Viola of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. In 2003 he was appointed to the faculty of the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.
A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Neuman attended the Eastman School of Music, the University of Southern California, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. His teachers included Heidi Castleman, Donald McInnes, and Robert Vernon.
